Year 2 Reading and Writing Poetry Preview
Suitable for GD readers and promote quality reading experiences for all Expected pupils.
This is a preview of resources available in the shop. It has an array of classic poetry with comprehensions.
The sound collector has targeted comprehension for higher ability (working at greater depth) and then differentiated down so that all the class can access and enjoy classic poetry. Children answer literal, inference and evaluative questions about the poem. After that , they spend a day creating their own verses using similar pattern structures.
There are also other many fun and enjoyable poems to learn and perform by Roger McGough, and Valerie Bloom- such as The River, and other sound poems. Children can recite these poems from memory, perform them to an audience and answer comprehension questions. Children will learn how to identify rhyming words and generate their own. They will understand language techniques used by the poet and identify the patterned structures to write their own verse in a similar style. This fun resource can also be used as a poetry unit during English main teaching or guided reading.
Please see the shop for complete unit of work and planning with resources.
This document is to support teachers with feedback and marking. There is an example Powerpoint of good quality feedback and the pedagogy behind it - with children's work, next step marking, self assessment ideas and positive feedback language. There is also a bank of 'Next Step Marking' ideas that have been created to support teachers in their feedback to children that allow independence in revising their work. If marking is over explicit, then parts of the writing may be disqualified. It is highly recommended not to over mark and train children to understand teacher feedback e.g. Use varied sentences for effect on the reader/audience (means that the child has to use questions, commands, statements and exclamatory sentences). The detail in brackets is displayed in the classroom and given as verbal feedback to child. They then go away and improve their writing accordingly. This documents will give you more open bank of statements to use in your next steps (so moderators can't say the feedback was too explicit), and not use that piece of work as evidence for the child meeting the expected criteria (or above greater depth). Suitable for KS1, but can be easily adapted to Year 3 also. Hope you find it useful for your teams and use it to promote independent editing, revising and improvement of work. Linked to English 2018 TAF.
Punctuation signs with corresponding bands for each band. Includes supporting vocabulary e.g when each punctuation should be used e.g commas in a list or apostrophe for possession or apostrophe for words with contracted form. This is an excellent visual and reminder for students and will support children to work at the expected band and at greater depth in KS1 and above. Excellent way of children self assessing and or editing. Can be easily adapted to suit all key stages. Very bright and engaging resource. Useful to be laminated and arranged to look like a pyramid.
Band 2 Working below: full stop at the top of pyramid.
Band 2 Working At: full stop, question mark, exclamation mark and apostrophe for contraction.
Band 2 Greater Depth: as above including apostrophe for possession and commas in a list.
Year 2 Writing unit
The children can use this resources to research all about the London Olympic Venues and the Torch relay. Children can be given parts of the information to think of their own caption or headings. It will support them to write a non-fiction piece of writing. It can also be used as part of Geography to find out about in London. This unit was written to celebrate the arrival of the Olympics in 2012. However, it can still be used to compare changes in local area/London, how Olympics compare, or in general to read around Sports Day.
Year 2 Planning with differentiation and high order activities for literacy to support the new English curriculum. This is a suitable activity for creative writing in the traditional stories unit or as a short write for character description. Children will have the opportunity to develop and use expanded noun phrases, similes, suffixes, contractions and conjunctions to extend ideas and sentences. A good extension for year 2 is to incorporate a twist in the story and so the good characters (the three billy goats) become bad and the troll becomes good. Can be used before or after the little red riding hood unit also available by the same author on TES. There is also a grammar features success ladder included. It is designed for children to be able to self assess and peer assess when editing, and up-level their own work to meet the expected standards. Suitable for year 2 to achieve 'at' and beyond - Greater Depth standard in writing.
Africa Topic Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters- A play script about an African Tale.
Are you learning about Africa? Have you focused on learning a text in a different cultural setting? If so, this is the perfect and inspirational play script for you. It includes parts for 120 (a four form entry school), although this can be easily adapted, altered and edited. The resource includes relevant songs within an African setting including popular and contemporary songs that will add and enliven the show. These have been carefully selected according to the theme in each scene e.g envy, jealousy, beauty, king’s procession etc. There are clear guidance for props, staging and costumes that may be suitable for parents/carers or teachers to provide. These include pots, masks, drapes, spears, shields, plants and thrones. Hope this is useful and many thanks for purchasing this resource. Was used for end of key stage 1. However, it can also be used for any other year groups studying Africa.
Introducing cursive writing to years 1 and 2. By the end of the key stage children should be using a consistent legible cursive handwriting style to achieve greater depth. This resource is a good aid for classrooms to support teachers and pupils to remember the joins, and which letters to leave unjoined. The resource is useful for classroom and table top display. It can also be used to introduce all the joins correctly. In year 1 children should be reminded to form each letter correctly, with spacing and correct size. Year 2 should begin to join consistently.
